Beauty and wellness trends come and go and it can be difficult to know which are simply fads, and which are here to stay. One of the ingredients that is gaining momentum recently is clove oil — best known for its ability to relieve tooth and muscle pain, the substance has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which may make it beneficial when it comes to skin and haircare. Read on to find out how clove oil can be used, and if it’s really worth a try…

What is clove oil?

Clove oil is derived from the clove tree, a plant that is indigenous to Southeast Asia. The oil is produced in a distillation process that involves primarily the dried flower buds of the tree, but may also include the stem and leaves. Once distilled, the oil has a distinct spicy smell, and can range from clear to a shade of light yellow.

The oil has long been used for many purposes, including as a natural pain reliever, a remedy for digestive issues, and as an antibacterial ingredient.

How does clove oil benefit the skin and hair?

Clove oil has both antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and studies suggest that the substance can help to alleviate chronic itching. It can also help to promote the natural healing process when applied to the skin. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, clove oil helps to soothe irritated and/or puffy skin, and generally rejuvenate the overall condition of one’s complexion.

Similarly, the oil’s antifungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties make it a good option for those who would like to improve the health of their scalp — regular use may provide hydration and nourishment to dry skin, and also boost the hair’s moisture levels for a generally healthier look and feel.

How is it used?

When it comes to skincare, clove oil can be applied in a number of ways. It can be used as a massage oil; in which case it is usually diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba or coconut oil. It can also be included as an ingredient in creams, body lotions or scrubs.

In haircare, clove oil is most commonly found in nourishing conditioners and treatments that are best suited to dry and brittle hair types. It can also be massaged directly into the hair and scalp in its pure oil form — in fact, the act of massaging the scalp is said to promote blood circulation and boost hair growth.
